About 10 police officers per year are killed in ambushes, but five already in 2016

Statistics show that since 2000, there have been about 9.5 ambush killings of law enforcement officers per year nationwide, and that the number has been declining in recent years, to about six per year. But this year is off to a horrible start.

"Fifteen of the last 20 years, from a national perspective, traffic fatalities have been the leading cause of the death for police officers annually," said Steve Groeninger, a spokesman for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which tracks line-of-duty deaths across the United States.
